What is driving the growth of the remote workforce

What is driving the growth of the remote workforceWhat is driving the growth of the remote workforceThe world now stands on the edge of a faulen precipice. No longer are we living and working in an industrial age, but were now entering the new, digital revolution. Digitization and globalization are changing the way people live and work on a fundamental level. Businesses arent tied to a single, geographic location to source and recruit talent. Instead, the world is now any enterprising companys oyster. In the last few years, weve seen unprecedented growth in the remote workforce. This change is set to continue apace, with the numbers of remote employees projected to eclipse the static workforce by 2020.In just two short years, half of all workers will clock-in remotely. The drivers at the helm of this workplace revolution are technology and globalization. Below, well explore how technology and globalization are driving the growth of the remote workforce and how VoIP technology can hel p companies leverage the power of globalization.1. Technology and globalizationWith the rise in internet and smartphone technology, businesses have seen their potential talent pool expand exponentially. Companies arent beholden to finding and recruiting workers based strictly on a geographic area. Instead, companies have more choices than ever before to fill their ranks with talented workers.Workers in the digital age have different expectations, wants, and needs from their employers. They want flexibility and more autonomy in the workplace. Both the needs of the worker and the company can be accommodated with technology, which has been democratized. Anyone with a laptop, a smartphone, and a wifi connection can work from anywhere in the world at any time. However, these innovations, while they may be convenient for the worker and the employee, have a downside. Without the right technological systems in place, companies have a difficult time coordinating between remote workers and com pany headquarters. While technology is a big driver in swelling the ranks of the remote workforce, its also streamlining the processes if companies are wise enough to take advantage of these systems.2. Businesses are reliant on personal phone use.Businesses, especially smaller startups and mid-sized organizations, are incredibly reliant on employees personal cell phones. While personal cell phones can help to facilitate tasks and communication, they arent the most reliable way to do business. Some of the most significant downsides associated with personal cell phone use for work arePotential loss of customersCan be unreliableNot scalableRelying on personal cell phones to conduct crucial work-related tasks can costs businesses customers and money. Trustworthy, dependable employees who use their cell phones to communicate with clients can pose a serious risk to a companys bottom line. Customers can become attached to the employee, and therefore, the employees phone number. If the empl oyee were to leave the company, theres a possibility that he might take those clients with him. While it may seem convenient on its face, using employees personal cell phones comes with a host of risks and downsides. But fortunately, there is an easy way to solve this modern-day conundrum. Why is VoIP technology the answer for businesses?Business large and small can all take advantage of cloud-based phone systems and VoIP technology. Also, hosted PBX systems enable companies to avoid the installation, operation, and maintenance costs associated with VoIP systems. A VoIP service provider like UltaTel can host the PBX for them. A hosted PBX gives companies quick access to their phone systems features, such as faxes, automated greetings, conferences, and voicemail. When companies make the switch from personal cell phones to VoIP technology, they are skyrocketing themselves into the modern era. Utilizing VoIP and cloud-based services brings secure, streamlined communication and processes a cross their atomized, remote workforce. Employees are able to better communicate across all levels of the organization. The greatest benefits of switching to a cloud-based phone system includeReliabilitySecurityRecoverabilityScalabilityCloud-based phone systems give companies and their workforce the ability to access the companys infrastructure in one convenient, secure hub. Its much easier to coordinate dealings and tasks across the company through a cloud-based system, instead of cell phones. Cell phones dont give companies the ability to recover lost information. Startups that are trying to recruit new talent can differentiate themselves by offering convenient and safe cloud-based phone systems to their remote workers, instead of having those workers rely on personal cell phones. The times have changed drastically in the business world. If companies wish to remain viable and secure top talent from the remote workforce, they will need to utilize cloud-based phone systems and VoIP t echnology.Amr Ibrahim is Chief Executive Officer of UltaTel. He has a demonstrated history of working in the telecommunications, software development and technology industries. Ibrahim is a strong business development professional with a Master of Business Administration (MBA) focused in Management from Florida Institute of Technology.

Heres how to use mindfulness to make better decisions

Heres how to use mindfulness to make better decisionsHeres how to use mindfulness to make better decisionsA lot of the time you know what the smart thing to do is. But youre still worried about how it might turn out. Or regrets about a past decision are making you overthink things.Your brain is telling you all kinds of negative stories about how stuff might go wrong and you end up more focused on alleviating those concerns than making choices based on your values. So you play it too safe. Or you get reckless and swing for the fences. Or youre paralyzed and procrastinate. But theres a way out of this loop. Cue the trumpetsMindfulness. That thing everybody these days thinks is so darn cool but nobody can tell you what it means.Alright, quick definition for our purposesawareness of your thoughts and feelings without being consumed by them.(Yeah, I know, that clarifies nothing for you yet. Well, gimme a second here. Were just getting started, okay? Jeez.)A lot of smart psychologists took mindfulness and science-tized it and created ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.)Lets see how ACT can help you deal with your negative thoughts so you can make smarter decisions based on whats really important to you.Mindfulness to the rescue. (And, no, Im not gonna make you meditate.)Lets get to itHow to stop negative thoughts foreverYou cant. The end.Seriously, you aresonot in charge of your brain its not even funny. Go ahead and delete that memory of the time you embarrassed yourself in front of that cute person you liked in high school. Go ahead. Try.Any luck? Didnt think so. And the result of trying to suppress thoughts is even worse.FromACT Made Simpleresearch shows that suppression of unwanted thoughts can lead to a rebound effect an increase in both intensity and frequency of the unwanted thoughts (Wenzlaff Wegner, 2000).So mental whack-a-mole doesnt work. But heres some good news the negative thoughts arent really the problem when it comes to decision-making.Your brain makes thoughts. Thats what it does. And some of those thoughts will always be negative because your grey matter lives by the motto of better safe than sorry.Thousands and thousands of years ago, Caveman 1 thought a snake was a stick, got bitten, died and didnt reproduce. Caveman 2, who walked around petrified that every stick was a snake, had lots of kids and now were stuck with brains that create problems even when there arent any. Thanks, evolution. But that doesnt have to lead to poor decisions and bad behavior. Your thoughts dont immediately control your actions. You get to decide. At times, youve been worried but still made the correct choice anyway, right? Right.(To learn more about the science of a successful life, check out my new bookhere.)So whatisthe problem here? In ACT, they call it fusion. No, were not talking about nuclear reactorsYou are not your thoughtsYour brain produces thoughts. They just bubble up all the time. Some are utterly ridiculous (What if I filled surg ical gloves with butterscotch pudding?) and you just dismiss them. But sometimes you take that storyteller in your head all too seriously. So seriously, in fact, that you think that negative voice in your head isyouand you ansturm with whatever it saysIm such an idiot. This will never work.Im no good at this, its gonna blow up in my face and be shown on national television. This is fusion. Its when an idea pops into your head and you take it as fact, when its just another goofy possibility your noggin is bubbling up.FromACT Made SimpleIn a state of cognitive fusion, were inseparable from our thoughts were welded to them, bonded to them, so caught up in them that we arent even aware that we are thinking. Cognitive fusion basically means that our thoughts dominate our behavior. Thus in ACT, we may talk with clients of being pushed around by your thoughts or allowing thoughts to tell you what to do, or we may talk of thoughts as bullies, or we may compare the mind to a fascist dictator, o r we may ask, What happens when you let that thought run your life? Similarly, when our thoughts dominate our attention, we often talk about being hooked, entangled, caught up, or carried off by them.Things dont go your way and the grey matter pops out Life sucks And you believe it. Thats you fusing with a judgment. There are many different ways to interpret whats going on. But youre identifying with this negative one and saying, Yep. I heard it in my head. It must be true. That voice has never ever ever been wrong in my entire life so it is fact. When you fuse with bad memories you get regrets. When you fuse with scary visions of the future you get worried. These often end up affecting your decision making. And rarely for the better.(To learn the seven-step morning ritual that will make you happy all day, clickhere.)So how do you stop fusion? Oh, thats defusionDefuse the bombYouve done this before and didnt realize it. Have you ever stepped back from your negative thoughts and said, Whoa, whats with all this worrying in my ruder? Its like you pulled off the VR goggles and realized that whats being projected on them isnt the only way to see the world.FromACT Made SimpleFusion means getting caught up in our thoughts and allowing them to dominate our behavior. Defusion means separating or distancing from our thoughts, letting them come and go instead of being caught up in them. In other words, defusion means looking at thoughts rather than from thoughts noticing thoughts rather than being caught up in thoughts and letting thoughts come and go rather than holding on to them. When you experience fusion, that thought in your head is The Truth. It must be immediately reacted to. And you cling to it even if it makes you miserable. But when you give defusion a try, a thought is just an idea. Maybe its true, maybe its not. You dont have to obey it, you can merely consider it.So when youre mindful - when you choose to defuse - worries and other negative thoughts cease to b e a blaring fire alarm that you must react to. Instead, theyre a smartphone notification that you can choose to ignore.(To learn the 3 secrets from neuroscience that will make you emotionally intelligent, clickhere.)Great. So how do you do it?Ask What is my brain telling me right now?Ha I just tricked you into defusing. See how my brain is built into the sentence?Youre acknowledging that the negative thoughts are not you - theyre your brain.Youdidnt say Im such a loser - your brain did. Youre creating some distance there. And you can use that distance to question the thought.Yeah, often youll question the thought and come back with, But itstrue. I am a loser. I screwed this up last time and Ill screw it up again. Now you and I could go round and round with me telling you its not true and you saying it is true. But is itreallytrue? Heres the thingI dont care. And neither should you. When it comes to mindfulness, Is it true? is the wrong question. The right question is Is it useful? Is telling yourself youre a loser going to help you do the things that will make you not-a-loser? Nope.FromACT Made Simplewhat were interested in is not whether a thought is true or false, but whether its helpful. When that thought pops into your head, does it help you to get all caught up in it? Does it motivate you to exercise, or eat well, or spend time doing the things that make life rich and rewarding? So defuse. Step back. Say, I notice Im having the thought that Im a loser. That gives you distance. It puts the thought on trial. And often (but not always) that takes some of the sting out of it. You can observe it rather than immediately running with it - and making the kind of decision a real loser would make. And then hit it with the important question Is it useful? If you run with this idea as truth, is it going to get you where you want to go? Will it help you take effective action? Is this thought going to help you be who you want to be?Then make a decision based on whats really relevant - not your worries, regrets or fears.(To learn more about the neuroscience of mindfulness, clickhere.)Okay, lets round it up and learn how to quickly keep negative thoughts at a distance - and make even better decisions going forwardSum upThis is how to use mindfulness to make better decisionsYou cant prevent negative thoughts Stop trying. Wrestling with them only makes them worse. The real problem is fusion When you treat your negative thoughts as indisputable factsand not merely ideas produced by your brain, thats when they cause problems.Ask What is my brain telling me right now? Get some distance from your thoughts. Treat them as possibilities, not The Truth.Ask Is it useful? Doesnt matter if theyre true. It matters if the thoughts help you get where you want to go.Over time, you want to make note of the thoughts you regularly fuse with. (Maybe its I cant handle this or Im going to embarrass myself.)And then gently make fun of itOh, so were playing the Im not good enou gh popsong again? It takes practice to not get swept away by your thoughts. Youre going to have to spend time at it.Maybe youre looking at all this mindfulness stuff right now and thinking, Ill never be able to do this. Im an idiot. No problem.Take defusing to the meta-level. Use this question to drive the rest of your strategy. Is your question, Should I change careers?, Should I start my own business?, How do I learn amtsstube politics?, Who would be an excellent mentor for me?, or the age old query, What do I want to do with my life?Get focused.Get as specific as you can and then write your burning question down. For instance dont simply ask what do I want to do with my life? Instead ask what do I want to accomplish by the time I am sixty years old? Or how can I improve my presentation skills? Building ASMEs Foundation for the Future Part Two

Building ASMEs Foundation for the Future Part Two Building ASMEs Foundation for the Future Part Two Building ASMEs Foundation for the Future Part TwoMay 26, 2017 ASME President Keith RoeTo the ASME Community Greetings Once MoreAs promised, I am pleased to have this opportunity to continue with the second of three articles we began in the brde edition of ASME News under the rubric Building ASMEs Foundation for the Future. Last time, I had the chance to introduce you to the process that welches initiated this year ASMEs project to re-engineer the way it serves its historic mission and engages its members and stakeholders in order to create a truly world-class professional engineering organization for the future. One way to understand great engineering is as the successful execution of great design. And you might say that great design itself is a marriage of practical understanding of what we know works with a vision of whats possible. To design and engineer a great ASME for tomorrows w orld, our volunteer leadership and senior staff have worked tirelessly to gain deep insight into our success to this point our heart and soulmusik and to envision a truly empowered ASME of tomorrow. The first result of their work was the formulation and official adoption last year by ASMEs Board of Governors of a new and overarching enterprise strategy a great design for ASMEs future. The crux of that work was the Governors charge to us all, and it bears repeating hereBy 2025, ASME is called upon to be the go-to organization to help address key technology-related challenges in the public interest in a manner that engages core engineering constituencies (government, academia, industry, engineers, students, and technology-development professionals) to increase its mission impact as measured by reliable metrics...Simply put, ASME had to be ready to change and to grow in the following ways we had to enhance our relevance and impact among our global constituencies by becoming the go-t o organization for advancing engineering technology we had to improve our products and services in both our traditional and new areas as well as our product sophistication and we had to improve our engagement of members and stakeholders and deliver value at every level. Realizing the Governors design is what weve been about this year.At this point you likely know that to do it, ASME elected to prioritize its present and future efforts around five core engineering technologies which we believe represent significant areas for the future development of mechanical engineering. They arePressure TechnologyAdvanced ManufacturingRoboticsBioengineeringClean EnergyBy focusing on these areas and engaging mora directly with members and other stakeholders, we will provide the basis, broadly speaking, to build our product and services portfolio that will over time position ASME as the go-to organization in these vital technologies of the future. How do we build this foundation? Less broadly known but not less important, ASMEs staff and volunteer leadership recognized that to foster the world-class excellence we seek, ASME had to strive for increased excellence in our ground game. Day in and day out, excellence, engagement and value for stakeholders are simply indispensable to ASMEs future success. To foster such excellence and to take our organization from good to great, we had to operationalize the new strategy. In a transformative initiative, the staff and volunteer leadership, working with the Board of Governors, defined a set of linked 10 year 3 year 1 year goals that would guide all of us to achieving our vision as a go-to technology leader. Underpinning this initiative is an Integrated Operating Plan that will guide us to build our capabilities and provide outstanding products for our members and constituents that meet these 10-3-1 goals. These efforts will insure our continued focus on technology and our professional foundation, further strengthening ASMEs heart and soulAt the same time, to support the implementation of the strategy, we formed five Presidential Task Forces for the 2016-2017 term to address the practical challenges of achieving such excellence, in the following areasStrategy Planning (Chair John Goossen)Student Early Career Engineers Engagement (Chair Terry Shoup)Industry Leadership Engagement (Chair Stacy Swisher Harnetty)Group (Divisions and Sections) Engagement/Alignment (Chair Rick Marboe)Building a High-Performing Board (Chair Bill Wepfer)The as yet untold story of the 2016-2017 term, in my view, is the tireless work of all who served on these Presidential Task Forces this year. Your colleagues, some 50 or so ASME volunteers and staff who served and made them possible, have met either weekly or biweekly all through this year in the effort. They have worked their hearts out, reviewing our organization from top to bottom to an unprecedented level of detail and formulating detailed recommendations based on their review. Thei r recommendations to the Board of Governors have been so extensive that two full extra meetings of the Board were instituted just to consider them all. I will share more of the nitty-gritty of those recommendations, which are really the marching orders for ASMEs next chapter, in my next letter to you. Hows that for a cliff-hanger?Till then, please accept my thanks and best wishes for your dedication to our great Society. We are well on our way to that bright future will you join me?With all best wishes Keith Roe, ASME PresidentRead Part One of Presidents Roe series on Building ASMEs Foundation for the Future.

Marine Corps Physical Fitness Considerations

kriegsmarine Corps Physical Fitness ConsiderationsMarine Corps Physical Fitness ConsiderationsMarine Corps basic training has the reputation of being the toughest of all the services. It most certainly is the longest, at about 12 1/2 weeks. It has been said time and time again by former Marines that Marine Corps recruit training was the most difficult thing they ever had to do in their entire lives. There are two locations which turn recruits into Marines the Recruit Training flaschenpfand at Parris Island, South Carolina, and the Recruit Training Depot at San Diego, California. Where you go depends largely on where you enlist. Those who enlist west of the Mississippi River will likely go through boot camp in San Diegowhile those in the East will attend at Parris Island. All women attend Marine Corps basic training at the Parris Island location. In fact, the Marine Corps is the only service that doesnt have coed basic. Female Marines train on their own, separated from the men. Ba sic Training Fitness Requirements Before you are allowed to ship out to Marine Corps basic training, youll be required to pass a physical fitness test, called Initial Strength Test, or ISP. 5 Modern Career Skills Advice That You Dont Learn In College

5 Modern Career Skills Advice That You Dont Learn In College5 Modern Career Skills Advice That You Dont Learn In College The modern workforce has evolved steadily over the last decade thanks to ever-changing technology and the millennial generation, the latter of which will make up more than 50 percent of the workforce by 2020. As such, traditional job advice like, stay the course, even if you dont like your job and dont challenge your anfhrer or ask too many questions , are no longer applicable. Instead, you have to consider what it takes to be successful in a modern world thats moving fast and following a different set of rules, where passion and opinions matter and collaboration is critical. Use this advice to make your career the best it can be.1. Social capital can be just as valuable as personal knowledge. Its your first week at your first job and youre feeling like youve been placed in a world you dont understand where you cant add value or keep up. This is how everyone feels at their first real job out of college- and how many feel at a new job. Thats when you start to build your social capitalSocial capital is a form of mutual reliance, dependency, and trust. It hugely changes what people can do. This is truer now than ever. Its impossible in modern organizations to know everything that you need to know. What you need are lots of people who know lots of different things. Collectively youre smarter, says Margaret Heffernan , CEO of five businesses. If you struggle to provide value in meetings or brainstorm sessions, focus on meeting as many people as you can. Ask them questions, offer to help, and learn as you go. Not only will this make you a better employee, but youll also feel more confident having that social capital in the workplace.2. Dont let fear of failure get in the way of your career.Fear of failure was the most common fear among 1,000 Americans polled . While that may not sound shocking, what comes as a result of tha t fear is 13.4 percent of respondents reported losing a job due to their fear, and 6.1 percent gave up a promotion. In our hyper-connected world of social media, its easy to feel less-than when you see and hear about your friends succeeding at work, or you read about regular people who started million dollar companies overnight. However, those stories are the exception and you are the majority. Its scary to make leaps in life and your career, whether thats taking a big promotion or starting your own business. That doesnt mean you shouldnt. Dont let fear of failure keep you from making a move that could take your career to a level you never thought youd achieve.3. Always ask, How can I help you? at networking events.Networking is an important part of getting ahead in your career- when you know the right people, its easier to get jobs that you want or the help that you need. Thats why its critical that you dont immediately ask for something the connections you make can be helpful for a long time, and starting off by asking for something is sure-fire way to turn people off. Instead, offer your help first, whether youre meeting a new co-worker or someone at a careers mixerWhen first meeting someone you think could be helpful, offer your services first. Ask What do you need help with right now? What do you see yourself needing the most support with in the future? suggests halbstarker Rollins, Co-Chairman and Founding Principal of Valeo Groupe . He continues, Being authentic with connections and always trying to provide greater value makes them more likely to do the same for you. This sets the foundation for a strong network that is instrumental for everyone involved. The help you offer can be as simple as connecting the person with someone who has similar interests. You always have something to offer, so get creative if you have to.4. You dont have to stay at one job to move forward in your career. Sheryl Sandberg, arguably one of the most successful and well-known women in the modern business world, agrees There is no straight path to where you are going. If you try to draw that line you will not just get it wrong, but you will miss big opportunities. As Pattie Sellers of Fortune Magazine says, careers are not ladders but jungle gyms. You dont have to have it all figured out, she explains on Quora . Instead, she suggests adopting two main goals in life or your careerLet these lead you, rather than focusing on the traditional, climb the ladder style of building a career. When you do that, youll create a life thats based on your passions. 5. You dont have to work yourself into the ground to be successful.Theres a stigma in the modern workforce that you have to work all hours of the day, answering emails in bed and dragging yourself to office at 7am, to be successful. However, many successful people, including Arianna Huffington, would disagree with that For far too long, we have been operating under a collective delusion- that burning out is the necessary price for achieving success. I wish I had known this when I was 22. Im convinced I would have achieved all I have achieved with less stress, worry and anxiety, she explains in If I Were 22 Chart Your Own Path to Success .Instead, set boundaries for yourself- stop answering emails after 6pm- make time to unplug at night, and create a relaxing morning routine to prepare you for the day. Youll get more done and have more to offer at work when your brain is functioning at its highest level, not trudging along, just trying to get by.Use this modern career advice to build a life and a career you love. Take the wise words of Sheryl Sandberg and Arianna Huffington to heart- they may just be the words you repeat in your mind for many years to come.
